HANGING ON THE WORDS OF JESUS

Every day He was teaching at the temple. But the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the leaders among the people were trying to kill Him. Yet they could not find any way to do it, because all the people hung on His words (Luke 19:47-48 NIV).

As was His custom, Jesus went to the temple to pray only to find that the moneychangers and sellers had taken over the house of God. With holy anger at the disrespect shown to His house, Jesus began to over turn the tables of the moneychangers and chase out the merchants saying, “My house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of robbers” (Luke 19:46). The chief priests, teachers and leaders were of course angry and sought to find a way to kill Him but could not because “the people hung on His words.” The leaders knew that if they did anything to Jesus the people would riot and they would have trouble on their hands.

The Bible tells us that no one taught the way that Jesus taught. He taught with authority (Mark 1:22). This was not surprising because He was the Word of God and “the Word that God speaks is alive and full of power [making it active, operative, energizing and effective]; it is sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating to the dividing line of the breath of life (soul) and [the immortal] spirit, and of joints and marrow [of the deepest parts of our nature], exposing and sifting and analyzing and judging the very thoughts of and purposes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:12 TAB).

The people hung on His Words because they were pure words (Psalms 12:6), true words, powerful words and life-changing words. The Words of the Master are still the same. They have not changed and like the people who heard Him then, we too ought to hang on to the Words of Jesus. His Words never fail, they never return to Him void (Isaiah 55:11). Even when the circumstances don’t line up with His word, still hang on to His word and don’t give up. Remember Abraham? God told Him He would make him a father of many nations (Genesis 17:4) but it certainly did not look like it was going to happen. Both Abraham and his wife, Sarah, were already advanced in age. Even after Hagar bore Ishmael to Abraham, God made it clear that this was not the child of promise. But God did not fail. He fulfilled His promise to Abraham and the rest is history.

The Bible is the written Word of God. Read it and hang on to every Word. Take hold of the promises in the Word of God and claim them. His Word is still speaking today concerning your situation so hang on to it. If He has spoken to you in an audible voice, hang on to what He told you.

Friends, let us keep hanging on to the Words of the Master.

Prayer:

I praise You Jesus, not just for the things you have done but for who You are. You are faithful and You remain the same. You change not and neither does your Word. I thank you for speaking to me through your Word and for all the promises that you have given to me. Lord, I hang on to your Word. I will not let anything take my focus away from what you have said because I know that in your time, You will bring it all to pass. Thank you Lord for your goodness and your faithfulness. In Jesus Name I pray, Amen and Amen.
